Substance abuse and gambling addiction treatment

Home Substance Abuse Treatment Programs Substance abuse and gambling addiction treatment

Do you struggle with substance abuse and compulsive gambling?

It’s not uncommon for compulsive gamblers to have substance abuse issues too. In fact, the two co-occur at a relatively high rate, with a notable study finding approximately 10% of compulsive gamblers report issues with substance abuse. In the case of alcohol, the numbers are striking, with another study finding 73% of gamblers also suffer from alcohol use disorder. Dealing with one or the other is hard enough, but dealing with both at the same time can feel like an even more unmanageable burden.

And yet both problems can be overcome—with their treatment going hand-in-hand. Recovery Centers of America is now offering Rewired, a treatment enhancement service for those suffering from drug or alcohol addiction as well as problem gambling. The purpose of the service is first and foremost to navigate your recovery from substance use disorder, while also addressing your compulsive gambling disorder.

When you turn to RCA for inpatient drug or alcohol rehab and wish to treat your gambling problem too, we will enroll you in Rewired as part of your overall treatment experience.

Do you have a gambling problem?

Do you have an uncontrollable urge to keep gambling, despite its destructive effects on your life?

The highs and lows of gambling can rewire the brain’s reward system, leading to addiction—with the same patterns in thought and action as drug and alcohol abuse.

You might find yourself compulsively gambling, obsessing over it, while losing money, engaging in increasingly risky betting, hiding and lying about your behavior, draining your savings, accumulating debt, and even turning to fraud and theft to support your habit.

If you recognize yourself in these patterns, you are not alone. According to the World Health Organization, there are over 350 million people engaging in problematic gambling each year, with gambling addiction affecting over two million Americans. These patterns consist in general in escalating obsessive and compulsive behavior around gambling activities, causing damage to your employment, family and life overall.

How RCA treats substance use disorder and gambling addiction together

  • You will be cared for by a team of experts who specialize in treating both problems.
  • Your primary therapist will create a treatment plan that best suits your particular needs.
  • You’ll get extra support and guidance from a recovery support specialist, who is trained to work with both substance abuse and gambling disorder. These individuals are often also in recovery themselves, and can share their personal experience, strength and hope.
  • Group therapy will allow you to learn and grow alongside your peers.
  • We’ll address other compulsive behavioral disorders, such as sex, money or shopping.
  • Your loved ones will also benefit from family support resources, including educational programming and family therapy. Recovery Centers of America’s approach to treating substance use disorder and compulsive gambling is founded on science and delivered with heart.

Our team will work with you to treat your substance abuse and your gambling problem simultaneously through the following evidence-based approaches:

  • Motivational interviewing (MI) helps prompt change in behavior by resolving conflicts to recovery and directing you to productive goals.
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) employs a battery of techniques to recondition or rewire distorted and self-defeating patterns in thought, emotion and action, replacing negative with positive ones.
  • Psychodynamic Psychotherapy aims to reveal insights into the problem which have remained hidden, bringing them to your awareness through individual, group and family therapy sessions.
  • Family Therapy educates family members as to how different behavioral compulsive disorders express themselves and directs them to additional support services such as Gambler’s Anonymous, in addition to RCA’s family resources

Frequently asked questions

Do I qualify for RCA Rewired?

Qualification depends on two factors. First, you must be admitted to RCA for inpatient drug or alcohol rehab. You can then choose to enroll additionally in Rewired if you believe you have a gambling problem too. If you’re unsure whether your gambling is problematic, our twenty-question questionnaire will help you find the answer.

Can I use this gambling addiction service if I don’t have a substance use disorder?

No. If you only struggle with gambling and don’t have a primary problem with substance abuse, Rewired is not the service for you—though we can refer you to treatment services for gambling disorder alone. RCA provides treatment for drug and alcohol abuse, and with this service can provide additional help for gambling addiction and other compulsive behavioral disorders.

Which RCA inpatient facilities offer RCA Rewired?

Currently, Rewired is offered only for residential inpatient treatment at RCA at Lighthouse.

Which RCA treatment programs allow for RCA Rewired?

You can enroll in Rewired along with any of the specialized inpatient treatment programs offered at RCA at Lighthouse. It cannot, however, be combined with our treatment enhancement service WorkFlex™.
